Shoemaker, Dennis

Dennis Oney Shoemaker, 73, of Morenci, Mich., died July 10, 2020, at Hospice of Lenawee in Adrian, Mich.

Dennis was born April 22, 1947, in Adrian to Oney C. and Juanita K. (Speelman) Shoemaker. He married Norma Jean Glaser on Dec. 17, 1966, at Morenci United Methodist Church, and she survives.

Dennis graduated from Morenci Area High School in 1965, and attended Ferris State College before starting his career. He worked several jobs in his youth before hiring in at Parker Chemical in Morenci, working there for many years until the plant closing.  He then worked for PPG in Adrian, and then the State of Michigan Department of Corrections, which he retired from in 2003.

After retirement, he and Norma traveled to many places in the U.S. and the Caribbean. He also enjoyed volunteering at the Fulton County Health Center in Wauseon, Ohio, proudly having accumulated more than 2,000 hours served in the Food Services Department.

Dennis loved his family, was a friendly man with many friends, and liked to tell stories, especially to children. He wanted to be remembered as an honest man and a loyal friend. He enjoyed being Santa Claus for many years for children and at nursing homes in Lenawee, Hillsdale and Fulton counties. He liked John Deere tractors, bird watching, and spending time at the family cabin near Irons, Mich.

In addition to his wife, Dennis is survived by two children, Greg (and Mindy) of Hillsdale, Mich., and Brian (and Jane Wacha) of Morenci; one brother Larry (and Vicki) of Morenci; and two sisters, Jackie (and Ralph) Reckner of Morenci, and Pat (and Jim) Baker of Clinton, Mich.
