Pauline Dunne Yatzek, 93, died on Feb. 3, 2020, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility in Adrian, Mich., surrounded by her loving family.
Pauline was born in Adrian on May 28, 1926, to Earl and Edna Wilson. Polly grew up in the small village of Blissfield. She had an older sister, Helen who proceeded her in death in 2018, and a brother Dale L. Wilson who died in childhood from Bright’s disease (a kidney failure). Polly graduated from Blissfield High with the class of 1944. She then attended a bookkeeping school in Ann Arbor. She would regularly ride her bicycle from Blissfield to Hilltop, outside of Adrian, to go roller skating. This is where she met her first husband.
She married John R. Dunne on December 4, 1947 in Adrian. They settled in nearby Medina where they farmed the old family homestead, raised cows and a prize bull named Toby, and began their family. David was born to Polly & John in 1951 and their daughter Sally followed in 1959 when their great love and family finances allowed. Sadly, John died at home on May 10, 1975, after a short illness caused by lung cancer. Polly, whose inner strength may have been belied by her short stature, remained on the family farm.
Polly was cut from the old cloth, and while devastated at John’s passing, rolled up her sleeves and helped her family move forward. She cleaned houses, worked as an aide at Thorn Hospital in Hudson and later went to work in the office at Rural Electric Co-Operative in Adrian. David also remained on the family farm and began his independent agricultural drainage business which continues to this day. Sally soon graduated from Hudson High where she excelled, which overjoyed Polly. Polly had a fabulous green thumb and enjoyed nurturing her flower garden; an activity that she continued through last fall with Sally’s help.
Polly moved to Texas in the early 1980s but returned when her children began to marry so she could be a lovingly proud and doting grandma, which she excelled at! She was never a meddling mother or mother-in-law, but always there to offer love, help and support. She helped all her grandchildren learn to read, and some of our favorite memories are of our children climbing up into her chair with their favorite book so they could read together!
On May 27, 2000, she married Howard Yatzek, the longtime friend and former pastor of Medina Federated Church. Together they enjoyed traveling, sharing time in the garden, watching their hummingbirds, completing jigsaw puzzles, and attending worship together. Polly has always been a humble servant of God, not judging but graciously helping others less able or less fortunate by transporting to medical appointments and delivering Meals on Wheels well into her late 80s. She enjoyed socializing at the Morenci Senior Center where she and Howard shared weekly lunches and activities with their friends.
Polly is survived by her children David E. (Bonnie) Dunne of Hudson, Sally Ann (James) Dickson of Adrian. Extended family includes Howard “Butch” (Joyce) Yatzek Jr. of Clayton, Earl James “Jim” (Deb) Yatzek of Morenci and Roger (Heidi) Yatzek of Palmyra. Altogether, Polly was blessed with 12 grandchildren Lauren Dickson, Scott Dickson, Lynne (David) Sellers, Amy (John) Rodifer, Kyle Dunne, Joel (Melissa) Yatzek, Timothy (Lindsay) Yatzek, Daniel (Callie) Yatzek, Emily (Jamie) Beach, Scott (Stacy) Yatzek, Rachel (Kevin) Grayer, and Derrick (Tiffany) Yatzek, and 22 great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place at Pauline’s emphatic request, stating in her final written wishes “Yes, I’m in my right mind!” Family will receive visitors from 10 a.m. until her Memorial Service at the Medina Federated Church officiated by Pastor Darren Lemmon, on Friday Feb 7, 2020, at 11 a.m. with a luncheon to follow. Her ashes will be interred in the Medina Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to support the Medina Federated Church or the Hudson E.M.S.
