Pfund, Donald

Donald M. Pfund, Sr., 91, a lifelong resident of Morenci, Mich., died Jan. 16, 2019, at his home, surrounded by his family while in the care of Great Lakes Caring Hospice.

Born March 22, 1927, in Wauseon, Ohio, he was the son of Charles and Hattie (Barnhart) Pfund. He married the former Betty Jean Speelman on Dec. 31, 1947, and she preceded him in death a year ago on Jan. 17, 2018.

Don proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II. He worked as a laborer at the former Ace Drill in Adrian for more than 25 years before his retirement. Following retirement, he worked as a member of the maintenance crew at Lake Hudson State Park, a job he loved. In younger years he enjoyed bowling and coaching the baseball and softball teams of his children.

Don was known as a proud man with a strong work ethic, a value he instilled in his children. He was very talented and could fix or make just about anything he set his mind to. He loved the outdoors, and enjoyed afternoon rides through the countryside with his wife and dog, Mindy. Most importantly, he had a great love for his family and found the greatest joy when in their company.

Don is survived by four children, Sandra (and Bill) Hilton, Tom Pfund, Gary (and Judy) Pfund, and Debra (and Larry) Lucas, all of Morenci; two siblings, Richard Pfund of Florida and Irene Moran of Morenci; seven grandchildren, Bryan (and Jennie), Brad  (and Amy), Barry (and Emily), Jill (and Lisa), Jade, Nicholas (and Xanthia), and Ryan; and six great-grandchildren, Mckenzie (and Cody), Maggie, Billy, Joey, Zach and Delaney.

In addition to his parents and wife of 70 years, he was preceded in death by a son, Donald L. Pfund, Jr.; and two brothers, Robert and Edward Pfund.

In accordance with Don’s wishes, all services will be private and burial with military honors will take place in Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci. Arrangements are being handled by Eagle Funeral Home in Morenci.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Great Lakes Caring Hospice or the Lenawee Humane Society.
