Betsey Jane Smith, 73, of Seneca Township, rural Morenci, Mich., died Dec. 23, 2018, at the Hospice of Lenawee home.
She was born May 15, 1945, in Adrian, Mich., the daughter of Carl Elmer and Doris Lucile (Conklin) Trowbridge.
Betsey lived her early life in Addison , Mich., where she graduated from high school with the Class of 1963. She furthered her education at Michigan State University and later Eastern Michigan University, ultimately earning her master’s degree in special education.
She married the love of her life, Thomas Charles Smith, on June 14, 1969, in Addison. She initially taught in Alaska and Illinois during her husband’s military career, and after settling back in Lenawee County, she finished her teaching career at Adrian Public Schools, where she retired in 2007.
Betsey was a long-time member of the Morenci First Congregational Church, and upheld memberships with the Michigan Education Association and the Morenci Garden Club. She always looked forward to spending time with her family, including family trips, especially up north to the family cabin. In her spare time, she enjoyed scrapbooking, reading and gardening.
In addition to her husband, Tom, Betsey is survived by two daughters, Michelle (and Richard) Stevens of Morenci and Monica (and Dennis) Blackwell of Lambertville, Mich.; two sisters, Gail Hamilton of Onsted, Mich., and Janet Francoeur of New Bern, N.C.; and five grandchildren, James Thomas “JT”, Zachary, Wyatt, Alex and Lilly.
Visitation is planned from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Eagle Funeral Home in Morenci. Funeral services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at the funeral home with Pastor Greg Morrison officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.
