Opdycke, Hutoka

Hutoka Alice Opdycke, 94, of rural Fayette, Ohio, died Oct. 3, 2018, at the Ebeid Hospice Residence in Sylvania, Ohio.

Born April 2, 1924, in Woodburn, Ind., she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Esther (Zimmerman) Gerig.

Hutoka lived her formative years in Woodburn and later in West Unity, Ohio, where she graduated from high school with the Class of 1942. She became a wife that same year, on May 31, 1942, to the love of her life, Floyd Emerson Opdycke. Floyd died Jan. 6, 2014 after 71 years of marriage.

A proud farmer’s wife, Hutoka handled with loving care the demands of the household while raising their seven children. She was a member of the Mother of Twins Club, Franklin Friendly Folks, and the Red Hat Society. An avid traveler, she visited nearly every state and accompanied Floyd on numerous fishing and hunting trips each year. She enjoyed quilting and crocheting, and playing cards, and especially delighted in hosting family gatherings.

She is survived by seven children, James Wayne Opdycke of Archbold, Ohio, Lee Waldo (and Marilyn) Opdycke of Fayette, Larry Ray Opdycke of Fairbanks, Alaska, Donald Floyd (and Joan) Opdycke of Alvordton, Ohio, Ella Marie Lichtenwald of Archbold, Ohio, Connie Sue (and Ken) Wagner of Fayette, and Lyle Lynn “Butch” (and Linda) Opdycke of Fayette; a sister, Velma Albert of Paulding, Ohio; 21 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Hutoka was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Lloyd Gerig; a sister, Fern Merillat; a grandson, Chris Opdycke; a granddaughter, Belinda Opdycke; and a son-in-law, Allan Lichtenwald.

Visitation is planned from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at Eagle Funeral Home in Fayette. Funeral services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at the funeral home, with Pastor Jeff Bandy officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Union Cemetery in Fayette.
