Richard G. Schaffner, 84, of Port Sanalac, Mich., died June 28, 2018, in his home after a brief battle with cancer.
He was born Dec. 7, 1933, in Morenci, Mich., the son of the late Gerald and Marie (Estel) Schaffner. He and Joanne Staskiewicz Lubnau were married on Dec. 26, 1998, in Port Sanilac.
Richard retired from Sanilac Intermediate School District where he served as an administrator. Prior to taking the position there, he was a teacher, farmer, OSU Agricultural Extension agent, part-time electrician, umpire and Air Force Lieutenant.
He was active in the communities that he lived in, serving as a leader in the Lions Club, city council, 4-H, FFA and church council. Richard earned degrees from both the Ohio State University and Michigan State University.
He will be remembered for lifelong learning, his love for reading, his sense of humor and love for family.
In addition to his wife, Joanne, Richard is survived by sons James (and Tara) and David (and Erin); daughter Sarah (and Doug) Schrock; grandchildren James (and Jessica) and Abigail Schaffner, Eric, Andrew and Nick Schaffner and Kate (and Klein) Gnagey, Hannah and Ian Schrock; and a great-granddaughter, Margot Gnagey.
Visitation is planned from 9 a.m. until noon Aug. 11 at the Pomeroy Funeral Home in Lexington. A memorial Mass is scheduled at 1 p.m. Aug. 11 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Port Sanilac, with Fr. Donald Eppenbrock officiating. Inurnment will be at Old St. Mary Columbarium.
Memorials are suggested to a hospice or library of the donor’s choice.
