Erma June Johnson, 89, of Jackson, Mich., died peacefully at home June 20, 2018, surrounded by her family and friends
June was born in Akron, Ohio, to Russell and Erma Bower. After graduation from Coventry High School, she attended Ashland College and graduated from Akron City Hospital School of Nursing. Shortly after graduation she moved to Jackson, Mich., where she worked nights at Mercy Hospital. After two years, she was asked to move to Cuyahoga Falls to take charge of the Osteopathic Hospital operating room. While there, she married Harold Johnson.
She and Harold moved to Nevada for a short time, then to Rhode Island where she took a 12-month anesthesia course. She was responsible for setting up anesthesia departments in several small hospitals in the Jackson area, including Addison, Morenci and Hudson. Eventually she worked at Doctors Hospital where she retired at age 70.
June belonged to the Vasa Lodge (Swedish) and the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, sewing, ceramics, spending time with her family, swimming and traveling.
She is survived by her children, Karl, Eric (and Mary), Kurt (and Darla) and Ellen (and Farris); grandchildren, Zachary, Lucas, Gabriel (and Miranda), Jacob, Hannah, Ava and Gia; great-granddaughter McKenna; sisters-in-law Margaret Bower and Edna Wilson; and many nieces and nephews.
June was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, and brothers David and Milton.
A memorial service is planned at noon July 28 at Loomis Park Baptist Church, Jackson, with visitation from 11 a.m. until the time of service.
