Charles E. Cox, 75, of Morenci, Mich., died March 9, 2018, at Magnumcare in Adrian, Mich., where he has resided for the past several years. Born June 12, 1942, in Fairfield Township, Mich., he was the son of the late Robert and Ethel (Sallows) Cox.
Charlie served more than 24 years in the United States Air Force and Navy, and also worked for 20 years as a millwright at Stauffer Chemical in Adrian. He was an active member of the Morenci American Legion Post 368 and the 40 & 8, and served a term as district commander. He enjoyed flying model airplanes and snowmobiling.
Charlie married Karen Barden Pennington of Lyons, Ohio, on Dec. 27, 1980, in Fairfield Township. In 1989, they moved to the Houghton Lake area, where they made numerous friends and memories for 13 years, before moving back to Morenci. Charlie and Karen shared 28 years together before her death on April 24, 2008.
Surviving are two daughters, Wendy (and Matthew) Watson and Jenny (and Bobby) Fusher, both of Fayetteville, Ark.; three step-sons, Timothy (and Chris) Pennington of Fayette, Michael (and Denise) Pennington of Lyons, and William (and Sarah) Pennington of Lyons; a brother, Michael (and Carol) Cox of Morenci; two sisters, Ann (and Ken) Lemley of Adrian and Mary (and Dan) Gilson of Deerfield, Mich.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Charlie was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Cox, and a grandson, Ronnie Hurst.
A memorial service is planned at 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, at Eagle Funeral Home in Morenci, with Pastor Heather Schimmel officiating. Military honors commemorating his service will follow, provided by the Morenci American Legion Post 368. Visitation is planned from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
