Benjamin George Jarrell, 65, of Morenci, Mich., died Jan. 11, 2018, at home, surrounded by his family while under the compassionate care of Hospice of Lenawee.
Ben was born March 9, 1952, in Charleston, W.V., the son of Carlis B. and Marie (Stover) Jarrell. The Jarrell family moved from West Virginia to Morenci when Ben was in grade school. It was Morenci where he was proud to call home.
He met the love of his life, Elizabeth “Liz” Morningstar of Fayette, Ohio, and they were united in marriage Nov. 5, 1971, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Fayette. Ben was employed for more than 24 years at Wacker Chemical Company in Tecumseh, and recently retired in 2014. He was a proud member of the Sons of American Legion Post #368, the Morenci Eagles, the Maple City Riders and the Morenci Legion Riders.
Ben enjoyed family camping, drag racing and trap shooting as a young adult. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed following the Pittsburgh Steelers, University of Michigan and West Virginia football, as well as Golden State Warriors basketball. In more recent years, he enjoyed motorcycling, golfing, traveling, fishing and camping. This past summer he and Liz enjoyed seasonal camping at Sunny’s Campground near Wauseon.
Remembered for his warm affection and his witty sense of humor, Ben was a friend to everyone he knew. He liked listening to bluegrass music, and eventually learned to play those tunes on his guitar. He always loved family gatherings at his home for holidays, birthdays, and barbecues. His family and his faith in Jesus Christ meant the most to Ben, and both provided him comfort throughout the blessings and trials of his life.
In addition to his wife, Ben is survived by children Tammy Clement of Morenci, Julia Jarrell of Morenci, and Matthew Jarrell of Mattawan, Mich.; a brother, Kent (and Debbie) Jarrell of Morenci; grandchildren, Tequoia Jarrell, Shannon (and Brandon) Byers, Tahjanay Jarrell, Antonio Jarrell, Azaan Jarrell, Amy (and Tommy) Hilyard, Sam (and Amy) Majchrowski, Sydney Brady, Tobie Brady, and Selena Brady; eleven great-grandchildren; father-in-law, Loren Morningstar; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Morningstar, Marilyn Morningstar, Sandra Jarrell and Shirley Jarrell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Brent and Clint Jarrell; a grandson, Connor Brady; a nephew, Jim Jarrell; and his mother-in-law, Eleanor Morningstar.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is planned at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Eagle Funeral Home in Morenci, with his son Matthew Jarrell and Pastor Gail Blum officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci. Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday.
Memorial donations are suggested to Hospice of Lenawee. The family also suggests that those able to donate blood do so in Ben’s honor at a local Red Cross blood drive.
