Shirley Ann Bates, 75, of Seneca, Mich., died Dec. 4, 2017, at her home, surrounded by her loving family while under the care of Hospice of Lenawee.
She was born Aug. 29, 1942, in Adrian, Mich., the daughter of Ruth E. Bice and Dexter E. Phillips. She was later adopted by her step-father, Sherman Bays. Shirley lived her early life in the Sand Creek and Clayton communities and resided in Seneca for the past 45 years. She married the love of her life, Paul J. Bates, on June 22, 1963, in Hudson, Mich., and he survives.
After working at Fayette Tubular Products and Merillat Cabinetry in Adrian, Shirley was employed as a receiving clerk at the Adrian Meijer store for 16 years, and she retired in 1998. She enjoyed motorcycle trips with her husband, reading and crocheting. Her family and friends were the center of her life and brought her the greatest joy.
In addition to her husband of 54 years, she is survived by her children, Ronald (and Robin) Bates of Manitou Beach, Mich., Danielle Mills of Morenci, and Neil (and Jennifer) Bates of Ft. Myers, Fla.; three brothers, Rick (and Rose) Bays of Waldron, Mich., Rock (and Irene) Bays of Morenci, and Rex (and Judy) Bays of Palmyra, Mich.; two sisters, Wanda (and Don) Boies and Linda McCoy, both of Hudson; four grandchildren, Eric (and Aarika) Bates, Brandi (and Sean) Klein, Hailey Miller and Regan Miller; and a great-grandson, Phoenix Bates.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jean Werner.
Cremation will take place and a memorial service is planned at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Eagle Funeral Home in Morenci, with Rev. Bill VanValkenburg officiating.
Visitation is scheduled from 2 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
Shirley will be laid to rest in the Butler Cemetery in Chesterfield Township, Ohio.
