Whitehouse, Lorene

Lorene Ellen Rupp Whitehouse, 97, died Nov. 25, 2016, at Brookdale Assisted Living in Adrian, Mich.

Lorene was born Aug. 6, 1919, and grew to adulthood in Morenci, Mich. Her father, Sam Rupp, ran a fox farm and then a hatchery. Her mother, Emma, brought to her a love of books and an insistence on education. She lived the vast majority of her life in Morenci. After graduating at age 16 from Morenci High School, she attended University of Michigan and then Albion College, where she met the love of her life, Keith Whitehouse. For many years, the couple resided at 128 South Summit Street, where they raised their children Susie (and Mike) Wiley, Bill (and Marsha) Whitehouse, and Jim (and Marsha) Whitehouse.

Lorene spent many hours in her garden and held various positions in the local Garden Club as well as the State of Michigan Garden Club. The garden expanded when she and Keith moved to Birdland Farm on Mulberry Road. Together they planted and nourished tiny seedlings that grew to be huge pine trees. Together they loved the land. Together they hosted many parties, with Lorene providing scrumptious meals.

Lorene passed on her love of learning to her children, and they in turn continue to pass it on to their children, including: Kathy Westfall (and fiancé Miguel, children Anthony, Sam and Mariana), Betsy Jeffrey (and spouse Joel, children Travis and Isaac), Brad (and spouse Melissa, children Walker, Oscar and William), Scott (and spouse Jessica, children Nora and Maren), Meredith Swank (and spouse Jason, son Simon), TJ (and spouse Abby, children Ruby and Milly), and Jill (and spouse John Binsfeld). Marcia Regan, like family, watched over Lorene (and before that, Keith), as loving caretaker.

Lorene’s ashes will be mixed with Keith’s, as they requested. Memorials are suggested to the Morenci Congregational Church (her church from childhood to death), the Stair District Library in Morenci (where she read many a book), or Hospice of Lenawee who provided care for her.
Visitation is planned at the Morenci First Congregational Church from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12.

Arrangements are being handled by Eagle Funeral Home in Morenci.
