Fayette’s varsity girls kept the advantage in the first half Thursday against Hilltop, then made their statement after the break with a 19-7 third quarter. The Eagles moved to 16-3 overall with a 56-35 win.
“The kids played really well with a lot of energy and intensity,” coach Scoop Miller said. “Hilltop has improved as the season has gone along and they almost beat Swanton recently.”
Taylor Griffiths’ outside shooting paved the way as she connected for two three-point shots in the second quarter, then added three more in the third to finish with 23 points. She hit five of seven shots from outside the arc.
Hannah Machacek reached double figures with 11 points and hit three three-pointers.
“It was a good all-around game for Hannah,” Miller said. “Her defense was outstanding and it carried over to the others.”
The Eagles were strong from the free throw line, hitting 12 of 16, and they held turnovers to eight. They took a 25-19 rebound advantage. Griffiths and Alexis Fruchey each collected six.
“We got some great moments from kids off the bench,” Miller said. “They did just we wanted them to do and held the intensity.”
• The Eagles took on NWOAL champs Delta on Tuesday night and entertain Pettisville on Thursday. A re-scheduled contest with Evergreen is planned at 6 p.m. Saturday, followed by the boys game.
“Those are three quality opponents heading into the tournaments,” Coach Miller said.
Fayette begins tournament play Wednesday, Feb. 25, at Bryan against Montpelier.
