Erin Lilliefors was hired last week to take over as the district's music director. The Muskegon native lives in Tecumseh with her husband, a Tecumseh graduate.
Ms. Lilliefors earned a degree in music education from Eastern Michigan University and is taking graduate courses there in music composition. While in college, she served as first chair for tuba in the EMU symphony and was also the section leader of the marching band.
She worked as an assistant band director in Texas for the past five years where both the middle and high school bands earned high ratings in the state competition.
"I enjoyed it," Ms. Lilliefors said, "but there were lots of assistant roles and I've wanted to be a director."
Besides being an avid gardener, she lists writing music as her chief interest.
"I would really like to write for middle school and high school bands that have limited instrumentation," she said.
One of her pieces was featured in Eastern's "Music Now" program.
