Scott Merillat was elected to another term as president of the Morenci Board of Education during the annual organizational meeting Jan. 12.
Carrie Dillon will serve as vice-president, Ivy Hutchison as secretary and Laura Spencer as treasurer. However, the district finance director was given authorization to assume most duties of the secretary and treasurer.
The board will continue to meet at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of the month in the middle school library, with two exceptions. The April and September meetings were moved to the second Monday.
The board again gave the superintendent the authorization to sign purchase orders, but withdrew a motion to authorize the superintendent to sign contracts and agreements. In the past, superintendent Mike McAran explained, a superintendent signed an agreement that only board members have the right to approve. In one case, he said, that led to an open-ended agreement with the teaching staff that is costing the district an increasing amount of money to cover.
Dillon was appointed the Michigan Association of School Board liaison for the school year and Spencer will serve as the representative to the Lenawee County Association of School Boards board of directors.
Incumbent board members Merillat and Phil McCaskey were sworn into office along with newcomer Todd Arno.
The board approved an agreement with the Wauseon school district that allows Morenci wrestlers to practice with Wauseon. The Morenci athletes would not be allowed to compete with Wauseon. Morenci coach Phil Stark will serve as the primary coach. Currently there are two athletes practicing at Wauseon.
Board members approved a millage resolution for the annual non-homestead millage renewal. The 18-mill levy does not include a property owner's principal residence.
