It didn’t take long for pizzas to begin baking after Pearl Phelps sold her Morenci restaurant last month.
Jeff Borg of Jackson had the business up and running for the new year, and he plans to make some changes from the former operation.
Borg said he lived in Morenci during the 1980s and that many people are familiar with his family’s former business: the chicken processing plant on U.S. 127 where the big rooster used to stand.
He came out of retirement to open the pizza shop with his daughter, Jessica Stenger, serving as the manager.
Borg said his pizzas will have a lot of toppings, cheese and meat, and that goes for the sandwiches, too.
“I want a sandwich that when you bite into it, you can taste the meat,” he said.
He will also sell stuffed baked potatoes, breakfast pizza, salads, tacos and other items. He plans to offer a delivery service to local businesses for lunch.
Borg said he has 30 years experience running a business, but operating a restaurant is something new. That adjustment will be made easier, he said, by acquiring the turn-key operation from Pearl.
A grand opening will be scheduled at a later date.
