Recall petitions were filed with the Lenawee County clerk on Friday calling for the removal of three Morenci city council members.
The petition seeks the removal from office of councilors Jeff Bell, Rebecca Berger and Brenda Spiess. The reason is listed as "incompetent placement of police department leadership."
The petitions were filed by former city council member Everett Cool.
A clarity/factual hearing on the petition language is scheduled at 8:30 a.m. April 16 at the probate courtroom in Adrian. If the court determines that the language would not be clear to voters, the petitions would be discarded. A petitioner could then file again in an attempt to provide greater clarity.
If recall language is approved, signatures must be obtained in order to place the recall on the ballot. According to state law, petitions would require enough signatures to match 25 percent of the number of city voters who participated in the most recent gubernatorial election.
City administrator clerk Michael Sessions checked voting records and determined that each recall petition would require the signatures of 136 registered voters.
If the petitions were approved, Sessions said, the earliest that a recall vote could occur is in the November election, in accord with state election law.
