Morenci’s teacher’s union signed a letter of agreement Monday with the board of education to plan for make-up days due to weather cancelations.
Students will now attend school for half a day Friday, Feb. 14, for a full day on Monday, Feb. 17. Both of those days were previously scheduled as days off.
As of Monday, this leaves four days to be made up in June. If the state education department allows districts extra days out of school this year due to weather conditions, the number of make-up days in June would be reduced.
SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT—School board members approved teacher and administrator evaluation instruments, as required by state law.
For the current time, 75 percent of the evaluation is subjective (based on the teacher’s performance in the classroom) and 25 percent is based on students’ academic growth.
Test scores must improve every year now, said superintendent of schools Mike McAran, through the school improvement process. If scores don’t improve over time, the district can be taken over by the state.
“We need to convince students that testing is serious business,” he said.
McAran spoke of his plan to hire two reading specialist to work with elementary school students in need of extra help.
COACH—Jed Hall was approved to serve as assistant baseball coach to help Anthony Barron.
ELECTION—May 6 was set as the date for annual school election to see renewal of the 18-mill non-homestead millage.
