An escape from a Morenci police car led to a pair of one-year jail sentences for a Fayette man.
Craig Curtis Canfield, 40, of Fayette, was handcuffed in the back of a Morenci police car July 21 during a kidnapping investigation. When the officer left the vehicle and returned to the residence where the complaint was lodged, Canfield escaped. He surrendered himself several weeks later.
According to a court report in the Adrian Telegram, kidnapping, assault and larceny charges were dismissed in a plea agreement. The larceny charge was for taking the handcuffs.
Canfield pleaded guilty in circuit court to a felony charge of assaulting, resisting and obstructing police. He pleaded guilty in district court to a reduced misdemeanor count of escape from lawful custody. Each charge resulted in one-year prison sentences.
Police were called to the Morenci residence when told that Canfield allegedly refused to return his girlfriend’s baby to her while visiting her home.
