Morenci mayor Keith Pennington appointed council members to committee assignments at the Nov. 14 meeting.
Tracy Schell will serve as chair of the Public Safety committee (fire, EMS and police), joined by Rebecca Berger and Greg Braun.
Robert Jennings was named chair of the Public Works committee (parks, cemetery, library, utilities, streets, sidewalks, building and grounds). Other committee members are Brenda Spiess and Berger.
Jeff Bell is the new chair of Finance, Legal, Personnel and Economic Development. Other members are Braun and Spiess.
Schell will continue to serve as mayor pro tempore.
The mayor’s recommendations for department heads and appointed officials will be listed for council’s approval at the Dec. 12 meeting. The second meeting of November was canceled.
CAMERA—The city will apply for a grant to buy a sewer camera to give a close-up inspection of lines. The grant would pay three-fourths of the $10,000 camera system cost. The grant comes through the risk reduction plan of the city’s insurer.
VIDEO—The police department’s new in-car video system has been installed to replace an old system. Police chief Larry Weeks described the system as an important piece of equipment for the department.
CLARIFICATION—An article in last week’s Observer told about council’s approval of a state request that calls for public employees to pay 20 percent of their health care costs.
The 80/20 split takes effect after existing contracts expire or are renewed.
