Travis Janish heard the third place winner named, then the second place winner.
“I thought this isn’t going well,” he said later.
He’d studied so hard for the competition—the state contest for emergency medical technician skills through the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA)—and now it looked as though his hopes for a medal were ending.
Janish, working with LISD TECH Center teammate Kasee Johnson of Madison, placed second in the regional competition in March and he hoped he could at least match that.
Then came the announcement: he and Johnson were the winners. They finished with the top score in Michigan and would advance to the national competition in June in Orlando.
The state competition near Traverse City started Thursday with a 50-question test covering various treatments, medical terms and acronyms.
A minimum score of 70 percent was needed to advance to the skills session Friday.
Janish and Johnson were assigned the last time slot among the 17 teams competing. The test went well and they lost only two points among the 64 possible.
Each team was faced with the same scenario: a female patient slumped against a wall. Teams were given 12 minutes to first make a general impression of the situation; move on to a rapid trauma assessment (palpate the spine, look for bleeding, etc.); place the patient on a KED board extrication device; conduct a PMS assessment (pulse, motor, sensory); and make a detailed assessment (eyes, ears, nose, etc.).
While Janish made the detailed assessment, Johnson gave the judges a verbal wrap-up of what the team accomplished.
The scores on the 50-item test were combined for the two team members and divided by two. This was added to the skills score for a final figure.
Janish intends to take his EMT skills into the Navy after high school where he will serve as a corpsman—an enlisted medical specialist. He would like to make a career with the Navy and eventually earn a doctorate through Navy’s schools.
The Morenci Area High School senior is the son of Lester and Joanna Janish.
