When Morenci graduate Al Whalen from the Class of 1950 read about Morenci coach Mike McDowell's effort to collect team photos of league champion Bulldog football teams from 1950 and up, he wondered why the amazing teams from the late 1940s weren't included.
It's not that they're excluded, explained Coach McDowell—he will gladly accept photos of earlier teams—it's simply that he only has records dating back to 1950.
After losing to Hillsdale in 1948, Morenci embarked on one of the longest winning streaks in Michigan football history. In 1949, Al reports, the Bulldogs scored 514 points in their nine-game season while shutting out every opponent. The Detroit Free Press named them the best Class C team in the state.
Al has some photos he's sending to help decorate the walls of the weight training facility. They will go along with another team from the 1940s. Bob Green loaned a photo of his team from 1941, before the LCAA league was formed, when Morenci was the county champion.
