In case you can’t see the opening, Morenci police chief Richard Wise points to the spot. It was time for the annual tornado test in April 1957 and residents were advised to hide out here in the “haven” of the Parker Rust Proof underworld for shelter, should a tornado show up.
If you toughed it out at home and found the town destroyed, you could then head for the Parker fallout shelter to find barrels of food, water and medical supplies stored for an emergency.
