Back when this area was served by Morenci Area Hospital, a support group known as the Hospital Auxiliary took on several projects to boost the operation of the facility. One project was the gift stand in the lobby.
In 1967, there were a lot flower arrangements in the case. Janice Bryner is shown here serving as an Auxiliary volunteer and Bonnie Rhoads is listed as a hospital visitor. Bonnie might have been a member of the Candy Stripers, also. I would have to fetch my yearbook to see.
At least once a month, someone reading the announcements at school would say Candy Strippers instead of Stripers and snickers would arise from every room in the building.
Strippers. Very funny.

I actually know of several people who purposely spell “striper” with two “p’s” but they pronounce it with a long “i”. I believe the rule is that if there are two consecutive consonants, the vowel preceding them is prounounced with a short sound. If there is just one consonant, the prior vowel is sounded long.
(I know I worded that very awkwardly but at least I know what I meant).
Is it possible that the very young and pretty Bonnie Rhoads in this 1967 photo is nearing 60? That just can’t be right. But now that I think about it, I believe Mr. David Green is nearing that magic number also. Wow! I wonder how old that makes me?
