Dr. Ray Lowell Taylor, 90, of Paris, Ill., died March 31 at Life’s Journey. He was best known to the community as a veterinarian where he had been in practice for 51 years.
Ray was born March 24, 1927, in Munson, Mich., the son of Rush and Rhea (Borton) Taylor. He attended a one-room school house in Munson and graduated in 1944 from Fayette High School. He attended Michigan State College for one year before enlisting in the Navy at age 18. After 15 months in the military, he returned to Michigan State College on the G.I. Bill and graduated with a doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1950.
On April 17, 1949, he married Barbara Mary Smith of South Haven, Mich. The couple moved to Paris, Ill., in 1951 where Dr. Taylor joined in practice with long-time veterinarian Dr. Bertie L. Stroh. Over time he was also into practice with doctors Gerald Dart, Robert Williams and Thomas Climer. When he came to Edgar County, Ray had a large animal practice but transitioned into a small animal practice. He provided veterinary service at the southside sale barn’s Thursday sales his entire career.
Ray’s civic involvements included: the Edgar County Fair Board for 35 years, Rotary for 52 years, as well as the Shriners, Masons and Elks Club. He was a member and past elder of the First Christian Church of Paris and a lifetime member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. He loved playing golf at Paris Country Club and his lifelong hobby was managing his many rental properties. Ray was active in pursuing a clean water supply from the Indiana aquifer for Paris’s future.
Ray is survived by three daughters, Sherry (and Dennis) Miller of Grand Island, N.Y., Cindy (and Bernie) Cash of Norman, Okla., and Holly (and Ken) Paul of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; a son, Gary (and Mary) Taylor of Paris, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Heather Cash, Ryan (and Gretchen) Cash, Samantha Miller, Katherine Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor, David (and Allison) Paul and Brian Paul; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters Ruth (and Paul) Johnson, Loree (and Merlin) Castor, Carol Jean (and Phil) Fidler, Leah (and Bruce) Rutledge; a brother, Paul (and Eileen) Taylor; and brother-in-law Gailen (and Wendi) Smith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, a brother, Wayne (and Janis) Taylor and a sister, Mildred (and Wayne) Uhler.
