Her courage and determination to not give up will always be remembered by those who knew and loved her. She hoped that because of her cancer story that maybe others could be saved.
She was born May 7, 1930, in Morenci, the daughter of William “Lester” and Florence (Salisbury) Mannschreck. On March 19, 1949, she married Roger Ries in Morenci and he survives.
Phyllis was a life-long Morenci area resident. She graduated from Morenci High School in 1947 and later from Davis Business College. She worked at the Citizens Gas Fuel Company from 1948-1953 and then was a stay-at-home mom until her children were raised.
She worked from 1970-1992 as the secretary of the LaRowe Insurance Agency in Morenci, which later became the T. J. Decker Insurance Agency.
After retiring, Phyllis enjoyed being around people so she worked part-time for the Morenci Area School district in several secretarial positions, volunteered as a HOSTS Mentor at Morenci Elementary School and was a volunteer at Madison High School.
She served on the Morenci Area Hospital Board of Trustees from 1981 to 1994 and was serving on the Morenci Education Foundation board. She was a member of Morenci United Methodist Church where she served as the church secretary, Sunday School teacher and most recently was chairman of the Church Council.
Phyllis gave of herself wherever she could help and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Besides her husband, Roger, Phyllis is survived by a daughter, Connie Ries of Manitou Beach; a son, Randy (and Linda) Ries of Adrian; granddaughter, Lindsey Ries of Adrian; brother, Marion (and Connie) Mannschreck of Morenci; special niece, Beth Bodette; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lois Mannschreck; sisters-in-law, Carol Mannschreck, Marilyn Ries and Edith Ries; and brothers-in-law, Jack Ries and Harold Ries.
The funeral service is scheduled at 11 a.m. Monday, May 7, at the Morenci United Methodist Church with Rev. Dorothy Okray and Rev. Jack Mannschreck officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci. Visitation is planned from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Morenci United Methodist Church or the Morenci Education Foundation Scholarship Fund.
