Jackie L. Vernier, 74, of Peoria, Ill., died July 26, 2012, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 17, 1937, in Waldron, Mich., to Rex and Rosie Schoonover Vernier.  He married Janette L. King on Dec. 2, 1955, in Morenci, Mich.

Jackie served as a member of the Michigan National Guard.

He received his bachelor of theology from Olivet Nazarene University, in Bourbonnais, Ill.,  and served as a minister in Eufaula, Okla., and Baxter Springs, Kansas, and served as an interim pastor in several central Illinois churches.

After retiring from the ministry, he moved to Maple Lawn Homes in Eureka, Ill., and worked as head of maintenance.

He later worked for the Association for the Developmentally Disabled of Woodford County (ADDWC) in Eureka where he found, after the ministry, his greatest joy in serving others.

Jackie is survived by his wife, Janette; his children, Crystal (and Howard) Love of Peoria, Heights, Ill., Nick (and Kay) Vernier of Mounds, Okla., Saundra Griffis of Bethany, Okla., Debra Schaffner of Peoria Heights, Ill., Mitchell (and Shelley) Vernier of Colorado Springs, Col.; his grandsons, Jeffery Love, Travis Vernier, Troy Vernier, Matthew Griffis, Isaac Griffis, Drew Schaffner and Derek Schaffner; his granddaughters, Stacie Vernier, Hannah Griffis, Rachel Griffis, Alyssa Vernier and Jessica Vernier; his great-grandson, Bently Vernier;  his brothers, Duane (and Janet) Vernier of Bethany, Okla., Devon (and Ginny) Vernier of Morenci, Mich.; his sister, Darlene King, of Bryan, Ohio; close family friend, Vicky Craig, and her daughter, Heather.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Kenneth Punches.

Services are planned July 31, 2012, at Peoria First Church of the Nazarene, in Peoria, Ill., with Pastor Jim Book officiating.  Visitation is planned from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, July 30, at Peoria First Church of the Nazarene, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday morning. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
