Shirley Ann Ely, 71, of Fayette, Ohio, died Dec. 17, 2011, following injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Hudson, Mich.
She was born Nov. 26, 1940, in Wauseon, Ohio, to the late Virgil and Myrtle (Decker) Wentz. She married Rodney Ely on Aug. 19, 1978, at their home in Fayette, and he survives.
A life-long Fayette resident, Shirley attended Gorham Fayette High School and was employed for several years at Fayette Tubular Products. She is remembered for her love of camping and going to garage sales, and she also enjoyed reading and doing puzzles. She was a member of the Medina Federated Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Steve (and Debbie) Bernath of Vista, Calif., and Ronnie Bernath of Montpelier, Ohio; four daughters, Julie (and Mitch) Garrow of Wauseon, Ohio, Sandy Bernath of Montpelier, Penny (and Dean) Oswald of Lambertville, Mich., and Debbie Bernath of Holland, Ohio; a sister, Diane (and Don) Bird of Fayette; nine grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; seven great-grandchildren; three stepsons, Rodney Jr., David, and Alan; and three stepdaughters, Patty, Connie, and JoAnne.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Larry Wentz; a daughter, Shannon, in stillbirth; and two grandsons, Brandin Kramer and Damien Bernath.
Funeral services are planned at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at the Eagle Funeral Home-Barrett Chapel in Fayette, with Pastor Darren Lemmon officiating. Interment will follow in the Porter-Packard Cemetery near Seneca, Mich. Visitation is scheduled from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.
