Robert R. “Bob” Shinabery, 67, of Tecumseh, Mich., formerly of the Hudson, Mich., area, died Sunday, July 3, 2011, at his home.
Bob was born May 10, 1944, in Morenci, Mich., the son of Robert M. and Lela F. (Zimmerman) Shinabery. He married Kathleen Sullivan on Dec. 10, 1965, in Angola, Ind., and she survives.
After attending Waldron High School, he graduated from Linden High School in 1962 and from Hillsdale College in 1981 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics, business administration and Spanish. In 1985, he was awarded a master of arts in English linguistics from the University of Michigan where, as a graduate student, he also taught English as a second language.
Bob began flying in 1963 and obtained a flight instructor’s certificate in 1966. He shared his passion with others as flight instructor at Tri-State Airport in Angola and Hillsdale (Mich.) Municipal Airport. He taught multi-engine instruction at Jackson Community College in Jackson, Mich. He also taught English as a second language and Spanish as an adjunct instructor at Jackson Community College.
Bob enjoyed mission work including two trips to Guatamala for earthquake relief.
After 42 years Bob retired from Shinabery Ag Equipment in 2007, which he owned and operated in Hillsdale County.
Bob loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, mountain climbing, RV travel with his wife and two Brussels Griffons, Muffin and Thumbie, and visiting relatives throughout the nation.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Matthew M. (and Dina) Shinabery of Waldron and Kenneth W. Shinabery of Eaton Rapids, Mich., and special friend, Deborah Myer of Canton, Mich.; three granddaughters, Emily, Jordan, and Bailey; one brother, Wayne (and Deb) Shinabery of Archbold, Ohio; three sisters, Joyce Hutchison of Green Valley, Ariz., Brenda (and Gene) Metz of Fayette, Ohio, and Eileen (and Larry) Baus of Archbold; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of his life is planned at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7, at the Hillsdale United Brethren Church, with Cliff Miller officiating. Interment will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery in Hudson following a luncheon at the church. Visitation is scheduled from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, at Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson, and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hillsdale United Brethren Church, First Presbyterian Church of Tecumseh, Hospice of Lenawee County, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
