Bobbie L. Downing, 83, died May 23, 2011, surrounded by his family at the Ebeid Hospice Center in Sylvania, Ohio.

He was born Nov. 4, 1927 in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Charles H. and Millie (Bertha) Downing. Bob graduated from Lyons High School in 1946. He married Myrtle Derby in 1950 and she survives.

Bob worked as a tool and die maker for Dura Corporation in Adrian, Mich. While employed there he held offices in Local 1348 as a committeeman, financial secretary and president. He retired in 1993 after 29 years of service. He was also an active member of the Lyons Christian Church, serving as a trustee. He served as a Lyons volunteer fireman for 42 years, and also on the Lyons Board of Public Affairs.

Bob will be remembered for his great sense of humor, but he will be most remembered by his ambition and devotion to his family.

Bob loved to travel and enjoyed spending summers at the family cottage at Devils Lake, Mich. The family enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. He especially enjoyed spending his winter months with Myrtle in Ft. Myers/Cape Coral, Florida.

Besides his wife, Bob is survived by three children, Teresa (and Randy) Burgermeister of Lyons, Cheryl (and Frank) LoFiego of Sylvania, Ohio, and Mark (and Taryn) Downing of Lyons; six grandchildren, Joshua (and Jessica) Burgermeister, Jessica Burgermiester, Cara (and Shawn) O’Neill, Tony (and Brittany) LoFiego, Dominic (and Cheryl) LoFiego, and Alicia Downing (and Ray Hohenbrink); six great-grandchildren, Aiden and Ella Burgermeister, Jace Burgermeister, Shamus, Maggie, and Finnegan O’Neill, Isabella LoFiego and Clayton Hohenbrink; three sisters-in-law, Gertrude Downing of Wauseon, Ohio, Doris Derby of Morenci, Mich., and Alberta Haupricht of Lyons; two brothers-in-law, Gerald (and Sondra) Derby of Sand Creek, Mich., and Roger Schantz of Archbold, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Vernard and Donzell Downing.

Visitation is planned from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, May 26, at the Lyons Christian Church, with the funeral services immediately following. Interment will follow at Lyons Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lyons Christian Church or the Lyons Fire Department.
