She was born on Christmas Eve 1913 to Bert and Estelle (Woodward) Wheeler at their farm in Amboy Township in Hillsdale County, Mich. She married Leslie Graham, a teacher and superintendent of Waldron Public Schools. He preceded her in death in 1988.
Bernadine lived most of her life in Waldron where she was a hardworking supportive wife and mother. Many times the Graham home, located across from the school, was shared by newly hired teachers. She canned and preserved the fruits of a large vegetable garden and cared for the farm animals. She was a wonderful cook and a talented seamstress.
She loved to host and attend family weekend and holiday gatherings. Her favorite memories included the family’s annual fishing trips, joining her husband and sons hunting, and times spent with special friends Katherine Fox, Lois Laser and Eleanor Welling. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Waldron.
Bernadine is survived by two sons, Charles Farrell (and Joyce) Graham and Max Richard (and Elaine) Graham, both of Jackson; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren, and nephews Jim and Farrell Wheeler of Bryan, Ohio, Richard Givin of New Jersey and Wilbur Givin of San José, Calif.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Gwendola Calvin, and Max and Darwin Wheeler.
At Bernadine’s request, cremation has taken place and no visitation is planned. A private memorial service will be scheduled at Waldron Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to Waldron Area Schools, Waldron Library or the American Cancer Society.
