Helen Jane Smith Lewis, 74, of Dallas, Ore., died June 28, 2010, at Salem Hospital.
She was born Nov. 6, 1935, in Morenci, Mich., to Staten and Catherine M. Roth Smith. She was raised in Fayette, Ohio, and graduated from Gorham Fayette High School in 1952. She graduated from nursing school in Toledo, Ohio, and was a registered nurse.
She moved from Ohio to Alameda, Calif., where she worked at General Hospital. She married Paul Lewis Aug. 8, 1957, in Alameda.
Helen moved to Wheeler in 1959 and worked at the Reinhart Clinic and then at North Tillamook County Hospital. She retired from nursing to raise her children. For a short time she lived in Portland before moving to Lincoln City in 1969. In 1999 she moved to Dallas.
She enjoyed traveling in New Zealand, she did crosswords in ink, and was a Jeopardy whiz. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, cooking, sewing, gardening, was an avid reader, and was a member of the Doubleday Book Club. She had a great sense of humor.
Helen is survived by her children, Karen (and Tim) Bones of Coos Bay, Ore., Brenda (and Mark) James and Steve (and Sandra), both of Dallas, and Jim (and Brynnen) of Issaquah, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her mother, Catherine Smith of Archbold, Ohio; and a brother, Dean (and Linda) Smith of Lakeland, Fla.
A private memorial service took place at the Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center.
