Arlene Markel Phelps of Adrian, Mich., formerly of Morenci, died July 12, 2010.

She was born May 23, 1926, in Fayette Ohio, to John Markel and Floy Kigar Markel. On April 10, 1948, she married to Mickey Phelps.

Arlene was a homemaker, and worked as a secretary at Parker Chemical in Morenci, was assistant to the Morenci High School principal and the conference director at Adrian College.

Arlene was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 42 years. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for more than 40 years and enjoyed being a member of the Deborah Circle.

Volunteering was an important part of her life. She was an escort volunteer at Bixby Hospital for more than 15 years and was co-chair of the service. She was a member of the Bixby Hospital Auxiliary. 

Education was important to Mick and Arlene. Their years of service to Adrian College and the love they had for the thousands of students passing through gave them the affectionate names of “Ma and Pa Phelps.” A scholarship for Adrian College students is being established in their honor. 

Arlene is survived by daughters Kathye (and Doug) Herrera and Karen VanHaerents, both of Morenci; grandchildren Kelly VanHaerents of Morenci and Mic Phelps of Adrian; one sister, Ardyth Seigneur of Kalkaska Mich; a niece, Connie Overy of Adrian; two nephews, Jack Seigneur of Kalkaska and Gary Seigneur of Green Bay, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her husband Mickey; her parents; a brother, Berlyn Markel in infancy; and a grandson, Matthew Phelps.

Funeral services at planned at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at Anderson Funeral Home in Adrian, with the Rev. Gary Dawes officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci.Visitation is scheduled from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
