John Guba, 99, of Marysville, Mich., died Dec. 14, 2009, at the home of his daughter, Joan Baumgartner, in Morenci, Mich.
He was born June 27, 1910, in Marblehead, Ohio, the son of John and Anna (Kracheck) Guba. He married Hazel Morris on Nov. 22, 1933, in Port Huron, Mich., and she preceded him in death.
As a teenager John was a commercial fisherman from Lake Erie up to Lake Huron. He lived most of his life in Port Huron where he was a fisherman and sold jewelry. For 50 years he researched the Great Lakes history and vessels. He was an avid photographer and had photos of every vessel that sailed the Great Lakes since the 1950s. His photos and information were sought by many historians.
Besides his daughter, Joan, of Morenci, John is survived by a son, John (and Monica) Guba, of Newberry Park, Calif.; a granddaughter, Jody (and Matt) Lane; grandsons, Dr. Joshua (and Jill) Baumgartner and Adam and Zachary Guba; and great-grandchildren Korin, Brooke, Brea and Bowen Baumgartner and Riley and Cooper Lane.
Besides his wife, John was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Jerry Baumgartner; four sisters; and four brothers.
Following John’s request, there will be no funeral, viewing or visitation.
