Barbara Barrett Sutton, 83, of Hudson,  Mich., died Sept. 26, 2009, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility in Adrian, Mich., after a long illness.

She was born April 5, 1926, in Scottville, Mich., the daughter of Orley and Elizabeth (Jenkins) Barrett. She married Justin C. “Jack” Sutton, II, on Dec. 27, 1947, in Morenci, and he survives. They lived in Lansing until moving to Hudson in 1988.

Barbara graduated from Morenci High School in 1944 and from Michigan State University in 1980. She was employed as a model in Chicago, was the former owner of the Perfection Studio (charm school) in Lansing, was a former salesperson with Fashion Two Twenty in Detroit, and was a former marketing director for WKAR Channel 23 PBS in Lansing.

She was a member of the O.E.S. in Morenci, the Addison United Church, Beta-Sigma-Phi of M.S.U., the Lenawee Country Club, the Devils Lake Yacht Club, the Addison and Hudson Women’s Clubs, and was a former director of the March of Dimes in Lansing.

Barb instituted women’s cheerleading at M.S.U. in the 1940s when she first attended the college. She was the first female cheerleader in the Big 10 conference and organized the first Big 10 female cheerleaders. She was also a former member of the M.S.U. women’s golf team.

She enjoyed square dancing, ice-skating, golfing and dance clubs.  

Besides her husband, Barbara is survived by her children, Justin C. Sutton, III of San Diego, Calif., Barrett G. Sutton of Traverse City, Tamera Jean Sutton of Ann Arbor, and Tyge R. (and Stephanie) Sutton of Nashville, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, James (and Patsy) Barrett of Morenci; and a sister, Grace Burke of Addison.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary Lucille Stephenson and Harriet Stephens; and a grandson, Demetrius.

Cremation has taken place and plans for a Memorial Service will be announced at a later date by the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson.
