James E. Schaffner, 82, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Fayette, Ohio, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania, Ohio.
He was born June 15, 1927, to the late Roscoe and Helen (Lantz) Schaffner. He was married to Yvonne “Joey” Underwood for 22 years and she preceded him in death Nov. 24, 2008.
Jim was a former farmer and retired from Peters Stamping. He graduated from the Gorham Fayette High School Class of 1945 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of American Legion and a past commander of Post #368. He also belonged to the V.F.W., Eagles and Moose Club. He was active in local organizations, serving on the Waldron Board of Education and Fayette village council. He enjoyed traveling, spending winters in Port Charlotte, Fla., and he dearly loved his children and grandchildren.
Surviving Jim are three daughters, Nona Schaffner of Tallahassee, Fla., Susan (and Jeff) Lowry of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Joyce (and TJ) Kelly of Westlake, Ohio; two sons, Scott (and Barb) Schaffner of Westerville, Ohio, and John Schaffner of Fayette; three grandchildren, Katie Lowry, Kevin and Chris Schaffner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one brother, Lester.
A memorial service is planned at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at Eagle Funeral Home-Barrett Chapel in Fayette, with Rev. Katherine Currier officiating. Interment with military honors conducted by the Fulton County Honor Guard will follow at Pleasant View Union Cemetery in Fayette. Visitation is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. Friday until the time of service.
