Mary Elizabeth Harris, 93, of Meadow Dr., Morenci, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at her home. She was born Oct. 6, 1912, in Carrollton, Ohio, to Joseph H. and Maud (Baird) McElroy. She married Robert V. Harris on Aug. 16, 1936, in Carrollton and he preceded her in death in March 1987.
Mary graduated from Carrollton High School’s Class of 1930 and attended her 75th class reunion in 2005. She received a bachelor of arts degree in education from Adrian College in 1935 and a master’s degree from the University of Toledo in 1960.
Mary was a school teacher for Lyons (Ohio) High School for several years, retiring from Chesterfield Middle School in the Evergreen School District in 1977 with more than 26 years of service.
She was an avid reader and had a reputation as a well-read person. Clubs and groups in the area have enjoyed poetry programs she presented, reading works from her own library and from books once owned by her mother who also loved reading. She was a member of the Morenci First Congregational Church and a volunteer for the HOSTS reading program at Morenci Elementary School.
She is survived by one son, Robert (and Connie) Harris of Tellico Plains, Tenn., and one daughter, Molly (and Richard) LeFaive of Ocean Pines, Md.; one sister, Ruth J. Downer, of Morenci; four grandchildren, Kenneth R. (and Laurie) LeFaive, Ruth E. LeFaive, Tobin J. (and Paula) Harris and Jason C. (and Rachel) Harris, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and three brothers.
Memorial services are planned at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Morenci First Congregational Church with the Rev. Jack Cahill officiating. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. at the church and continue until the service begins. Arrangements were handled by Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci.
