Myrtle Louise (Barron) Solomonson, 83, of Morenci, Mich., died Aug. 15, 2006 at Lenawee Medical Care Facility in Adrian.
She was born July 22, 1923 in Weston, Mich., to Walter B. and Alice (Dippery) Barron. She married Harold Solomonson on Dec. 23, 1945 in Seward, Ohio, and he preceded her in death.Myrtle lived most of her life in the Morenci area. She graduated from Morenci High School in 1941. She received certificates of achievement from Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science and the United States Department of Agriculture for Boys and Girls Club for beef projects in 1938 and 1941. She earned a teacher’s certificate to teach the Palmer Method of handwriting from Palmer Method of Business Writing in 1942. She graduated from Michigan County Normal Training School for Teachers in Blissfield, Mich., in 1942 and received a bachelor’s degree from Adrian College in 1960. She earned a permanent teaching certificate for all grades from the State Board of Education, Public Schools of Michigan in 1963 and earned a master’s degree in education from Eastern Michigan University in 1965, specializing in special education.
She first taught in 1942 at Medina School, a one-room schoolhouse with eight grades. She taught for a year, in 1946, in North Morenci, another one-room schoolhouse, and from 1949 to 1951 at Canandaigua School. From 1951 to 1955 she taught at North Morenci School, and after it was consolidated, she taught third grade at Morenci Elementary School until 1963 when she began teaching special education at the elementary and middle school levels. She helped expand the special education program at Morenci schools. She retired from Morenci Area Schools in 1988 after 44 years of service. She was also employed at the Morenci Rubber Plant and Michigan International Speedway.
In 1982 Myrtle was honored as Teacher of the Year by the Lenawee County Federation of Women’s Clubs. She was a member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and the American Legion Auxiliary. She belonged to the traveler group of the Ypsilanti Township Senior Citizens and to Lenawee County REACT.
Myrtle is survived by two children, Shirley (and Steve) Hyland of Brooklyn, Mich., and Harold J. “Jim” Solomonson of Morenci; two grandsons, Matthew (and Becky) Hyland and Chad (and Candance) Solomonson; seven great-grandsons; two brothers, Norman Barron of Ypsilanti and Howard Barron of Morenci; one sister, Alice Jean Somerlott of Santa Claus, Ind.; many nieces and nephews; and her cat, O.J.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Robert, Daniel, Walter and John Barron, and three sisters, Almyra Barron, Margaret Loveless and Mary Clark.
Funeral services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Friday at Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci with Rev. Thelia Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci. Visitation is planned from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
