Joan E. Waldron, 77, of Sand Creek Hwy., Sand Creek, Mich., died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at her home with her family at her side.
She was born Nov. 13, 1931 in Alvordton, Ohio, to Charlie and Iola (Smith) Allen. She graduated from the University of Michigan Nursing School as a Registered Nurse. She married Millard “Mick” Waldron Nov. 3, 1951 in Fairfield, Mich. He preceded her in death April 11, 1995.
Joan had been employed at Bixby Medical Center in the OB Department for 41 years, retiring in June 1994. She was a very active member of the Weston Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, was a member of the United Methodist Women and helped with many missions.
She was a devoted volunteer for Hospice of Lenawee, was a mentor at Morenci Elementary School and was a member of the Morenci Red Hatters Society. She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers and traveling, and was very active in Relay for Life. She was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to country music on her kitchen radio. She was also a collector of recipes and enjoyed trying them out for her family.
Joan was well known for her giving and compassionate nature. Time spent with family was a priority for her and her extended family and her church family.
She enjoyed traveling to the “Hummon Reunion” annually since childhood. She will be greatly missed by all of those who knew her and loved her.
She is survived by one son, Robert “Bob” (and Joan) Waldron of Grass Lake, Mich.; three daughters, Brenda (and Steve) Begnoche of Ludington, Mich., Beth (and Steve) Fetzer of Adrian, Mich., and Bonnie (and Gerard) Zenk of Jasper, Mich.; two brothers, Jim Allen (and Heinz Franken) of Germany, and David Allen of Adrian; a sister, Claudette Swift of Adrian; a sister-in-law, Sue (and Harold) Holland of Lyons, Ohio; three grandchildren, Michelle Begnoche, Renee (and Doug) Saba and Nicole (and Tyler) Iteen; five step-grandchildren, Laurie (and Casey) Randolph, Nikki (and Cedric) Coant, Adam Zenk, Anne (and Thomas) Case, and Barbara (and Joe) Baker; 10 step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brother-in-law, Grant Swift; and nephew Paul Swift.
Funeral services are planned at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, with Mark Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Morenci. Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Anderson Funeral Home and also on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
