Walter E. Teeter, 86, of Morenci, Mich. died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at his home.
He was born June 5, 1922, in Belding, Mich., the son of Carl Byron and Nina (Andrews) Teeter. He married Mildred Manning in 1946, and she preceded him in death in 1988. He then married Mary (Bowers) Hupe in 1989 and she survives.
Walter graduated from Coleman High School in Coleman, Mich., and obtained a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University. He worked as a loan officer and then as a business officer at McClaren Hospital in Flint, Mich. He served as administrator of hospitals in Durand, Mich., West Frankfort, Ill., and then in 1960, he moved to Morenci to open a new hospital there. He served as administrator for 26 years at hospitals in Morenci, Hudson, Mich., and Napoleon, Ohio.
Walter was a Staff Sgt. in the Marine Corps during World War II while spending three years in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of Morenci American Legion Post #368.
Surviving, besides his wife, Mary, of Morenci, is a daughter, Gayle Marie (and David) Carr of Greer, South Carolina; six grandchildren, Troy (and Angie) Harvey of Morenci, Shane Harvey of Greer, and Trevor (and Stephanie) Dominique, Seth Dominique and Megan Dominique, all of Morenci, and Ryan (and Angela) Gipperich of Weston, Mich.; four great-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren, two stepsons, Michael and Chris Hupe; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; one son, Gary Alan Teeter in 1968; one daughter, Sherry Gay Gipperich in 1990; and one brother, Arden Teeter.
Memorial services are planned at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci, with Gail Blum officiating. Military interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci. Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m Friday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Lenawee County.
