Mary Jane “Janey” Gillen, 88, of Lyons, Ohio, died Dec. 7, 2007, at Fulton Manor in Wauseon, Ohio. Her health had been failing since she suffered a stroke in June 2005.
She was born Aug. 7, 1919, in rural Delta, Ohio, to John and Edith (Northcott) Allen. She married Vincent M. Gillen on Oct. 2, 1937, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Assumption, Ohio, and he survives.
Mary Jane graduated from Lyons High School in 1937 and attended many class reunions throughout the years. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Parish and its Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of Lyons Live and Learn Club and served as a 4-H advisor for 21 years, helping to start the first 4-H club in Assumption. She was active in the community and will be remembered for all the wedding and graduation cakes she made for family and friends for more than 20 years.
Besides her husband of 70 years, Mary Jane is survived by daughters, Virginia (and Alan) Schaffner of Fayette, Ohio, and Marilyn (and Woody) Blaylock of Lakeland, Fla.; a son, Thomas (and Concha) Gillen of Miami, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Burt Allen and Ralph Allen; and sisters, Ernesta Borde and Margaret Girdham.
Funeral services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora, Ohio, with Fr. Dennis Metzger officiating. Visitation is planned from noon until the time of the service. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery.
