Every step makes a difference.
That’s what Morenci Education Foundation (MEF) president Bill Van Valkenburg wants walkers to think about when crossing the historic pedestrian bridge on Labor Day.
The foundation was selected as the benefactor for the 2013 Bridge Walk over Silver Creek at 11 a.m. Sept. 2.
“We feel very honored that the Morenci Chamber of Commerce selected the mini-grant fund of the MEF to recognize this year,” Van Valkenburg said.
Proceeds from the sale of this year’s bridge walk T-shirt will go to the grant program that funds special projects and needs of Morenci teachers and students.
Short speeches are featured each year at the walk, and Van Valkenburg intends to feature Morenci’s new school superintendent, Michael McAran, as well as a few teachers who have benefitted from the mini-grant program.
Van Valkenburg wants to make this year’s event an opportunity to furnish school supplies for students in need. He’s asking participants to bring items such as backpacks for all ages; highlighters, colored pencils and markers; calculators; binders, spiral notebooks and folders; protractors, rulers and compasses; glue and scissors; combination locks; and 24-count boxes of crayons.
Donations can also be taken to the United Bank and Trust.
