Morenci’s annual school budget hearing is scheduled at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, in the middle school library. The school will be open at the middle school entrance on Page Street.
The hearing was originally scheduled at 7 p.m., but was changed due to conflict with an interview session for the interim superintendent position.
The school district is expected to wrap up the current fiscal year with a balanced budget, but a deficit is projected for the next year starting July 1.
School finance director Erica Metcalf told board of education members at a June 3 meeting that funding would likely improve over recent years. However, she noted that the district is operating with fewer funds than it had seven years ago despite higher operating costs.
Additional cuts are needed to avoid ending the 2013-14 year in a deficit, and the true financial picture won’t be known until enrollment is established in the fall. The district has about 100 fewer students than it did seven years ago.
Metcalf hopes to have additional information about state and federal funding to present at the budget hearing.
