Morenci will have a shortage of city council candidates on the November ballot, but there's still time for someone to declare to run as a write-in candidate.
Bill Foster and Kebben Milliman filed petitions to become Morenci's next mayor to succeed Keith Pennington. Pennington announced he would not seek another term in office and he's still hoping to land the administrator/clerk job to replace Renée Schroeder in January.
Ron Apger and Rob Sweet filed petitions to fill two of the three council seats that will be vacated in November. Tracy Schell, Greg Braun and Robert Jennings are not seeking another term. Like Pennington, Schell applied for the administrator/clerk position.
Under current state election law, citizens can declare to run as a write-in through Oct. 25. If a declaration isn't filed by that date, any write-in votes received are discarded.
No residents filed to serve on the nine-member City Charter commission. Mayor Pennington announced his desire to update the charter, but a commission is required to decide what changes should be made.
