Plans are underway for an outdoor auction on the former Parker Chemical Co. property in Morenci following a vote by the planning commission last Wednesday.
Property owner Bill Foster spoke at the April commission meeting about starting an auction based on the successful auction and sale in Hillsdale. Foster said the land would be clear of all items during the week with the exception of port-a-johns and an office trailer, and the temporary use permit issued by the planners specified that condition. In addition to clean-up regulations, the permit allows activities only from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The permit for the auction/flea market on Mill Street covers the period from June 1—the date of the first sale—through November.
Planners also granted a temporary use permit for Tammy Clark of the Village Inn for a sidewalk café through October.
The permit calls for clearance of at least six feet between the curb and business activity and also for clear egress for entering and exiting the restaurant.
The planning commission is scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month, however, the next meeting is now set for June 13.
Members will review the Commercial Rehabilitation Act which would provide property tax abatements to the owners of commercial property that is being rehabilitated and also for new construction.
At the June meeting, planners will also begin to look at a proposed ordinance that would govern the aesthetics of downtown buildings regarding renovations and new construction.
An ordinance could establish basic design standards for the exterior of downtown buildings in hopes of stabilizing property values, permitting the most appropriate development of an area, and preventing the deterioration of conditions that would affect an area.
Ordinances from other communities make suggestions such as maintaining an appearance similar to existing conditions in the area, incorporating any exterior lighting into the design of the building, using decorative brick when possible, prohibiting wood and steel siding, prohibiting the use of fluorescent paint colors, and preventing discord with the existing community.
