Morenci school cuts suggested 2013.03.27

Morenci Board of Education members have heard many suggestions about ways to save money and stay out of debt.

Morenci Superintendent of Schools Michael Osborne will present his suggestions to the board in the coming weeks and then board members will face the tough job of deciding what to do. The administration has set a goal of trimming an additional $250,000 from the budget.

Following are some of the ideas the board is considering. No decisions have yet been made.

 

Administration

Join a health care consortium

Have the business office services provided by the Lenawee ISD

Use personnel through retire/rehire

Reduce the use of the Hudson administrative assistant

Refinance the existing bond

Use a K-12 principal

Use a combined superintendent/principal

 

Athletics

Reduce the number of coaches

Cut back on athletic transportation

Cut golf and wrestling

 

Maintenance

Clean the buildings every other day

Lawn care done by volunteers

Reduce the use of air conditioning

Use a janitorial service for the elementary school

Reduce the use of lights

Hire a consultant to suggest ways to reduce power usage

 

Transportation

Reduced or no cross-town busing

Reduce hours of mechanic

Stop interschool mail delivery

 

Basic education

Early retirement incentive

Purchasing fewer text books

Adjust scheduling in the middle and high school

Move grade five to the elementary school

Don’t replace retirees

Contract concessions (80% of school spending is for personnel)
