Posted in 2013 February

Morenci Fire Department serves the city and has service contracts with three area townships. Which of the four received the most calls during 2012?

The greatest number of runs went into a combined category of "assists to other departments." Gorham Township, York Township, Madison Township. Lyons, Wauseon and Waldron. In all, mutual aid was given to 16 departments over the year for 48 of the 168 calls.

Mutual aid calls were primarily for assistance in fighting structure fires, but occasionally Morenci personnel were called to provide back-up at a nearby fire station while the home department was out on call.

Thirty-six of Morenci Fire Department's calls were to provide manpower to help the Morenci Area EMS on a rescue call. Twenty-two calls were for traffic accidents and 13 calls were weather-related.

Twenty-seven percent of the department's calls were in Morenci—and 60 percent of those were EMS assists—17 percent went into Medina Township, 15 percent in Seneca Township and 12 percent into Chesterfield Township.

For the year, 236 hours were spent on duty. The longest call was for a house fire on Jan. 2, 2012, with 28 department members spending nine hours on the call. A structure fire in Adrian required 18 members and six hours.

The largest response in 2012 came in August when 23 department members were involved in a search effort. Twenty-two were involved in a nuisance burn report in July and vehicle crash responses involved 21 members on two occasions and 20 on another.
