The date of 12-12-12 is a once-in-a-lifetime event, says Morenci United Methodist Church pastor Donna Galloway, so church members decided to make it something special in another way: a free meal for the community.
The church will sponsor a free spaghetti dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the church basement. The menu includes spaghetti, salad, garlic bread and beverages. Guests are invited to decorate their own Christmas cookies for dessert.
The dinner is the same night as the Morenci Elementary School Christmas program and Rev. Galloway is hoping families will take advantage of the meal and have one thing less to worry about while getting ready for the music program. Kids will have the opportunity to an ornament for their Christmas tree.
“It’s just a way to say we celebrated together on a very unique day, in a very different way,” Rev. Galloway said. “Christmas is a season of giving and it can be busy. We just want to allow families to have an opportunity for some fun together and making memories, and slow down a bit to enjoy the season.”
A few young ladies from the church work with some older members each week to learn cooking skills, Rev. Galloway said, and they will prepare cookies for the spaghetti dinner. They will also help to prepare the bread and serve the meal.
