Garden Club sponsors container contest 2012.06.06

Morenci Garden Club member Becky Schermerhorn wonders how area gardeners are doing with their container gardens for the club’s contest.

There’s still time to start one, she said, since garden centers have a good supply of plants and garage sales offer an excellent opportunity to locate a unique item to use as a container.

Schermerhorn reminds participants to remember to take a photograph at the start of the project.

Growers should remember to work for color, texture and variety. Schermerhorn heard this tip about container gardens on a gardening program:

• The thrill—Work for something exciting or out of the ordinary for a focal point.

• The spill—Consider plants that drape over or spill down the sides of the container.

• The fill—Use color and texture to fill in empty areas.

“The Morenci Garden Club is so excited to see what everyone has come up with and we can’t wait to see all the different creations,” Schermerhorn said.

Entry forms are available from a Morenci Garden Club member or at city hall. For more information, call Schermerhorn at 458-6914.

Submit your entry form, $5 entry fee, and photos to a club member or drop them off at city hall by Sept. 5.
