A long-time member of the Pleasant View Union Cemetery Board of Trustees was honored May 7 and a new board member was appointed.
Dick Martin left the board in April after serving 33 years. Abigail Bieber was nominated to serve as the “at-large” member of the board during the annual joint meeting of the Fayette village council and Gorham township trustees. Bieber will serve a three-year term.
Bieber said she is looking forward to serving on the board and “assisting in the preservation and beauty of the cemetery for many decades to come.”
The cemetery board is comprised of a member from the village council, Julia Ruger; a member of the township trustees, Trevor Hibbard; and an at-large member nominated by the other members.
FOUNDATIONS—At the board’s April 9 meeting, members voted to increase the price of concrete foundations to $200 per grave space, effective immediately. The price adjustment was a decision based on the increasing costs of concrete and materials. All other prices, including grave spaces and openings, remain at the same rate enacted in February 2010.
The longer foundations spanning over the lengths of several grave spaces are proving stronger, Sexton Jason Ferguson said, pointing out that there are many older monuments leaning in settled ground. Ten more leaning foundations are in the budget again this year for replacement at no cost to the lot owner.
DECORATION POLICY—With Memorial Day less than two weeks away, citizens and lot owners are reminded that according to the Rules & Regulations of Pleasant View Union Cemetery, all decorations must be above the ground and in line with the markers. Planting of any shrubs or the use of glass or wire is prohibited. The board and sexton reserve the right to remove any item not in accordance with the regulations.
The decoration policy is listed on the signs at the entrances to the cemetery and a copy can also be obtained through the mail by calling the cemetery office at 419/237-2466.
