The Fulton Soil and Water Conservation District has rain barrels and compost tumblers available for purchase.
Rain barrels—Rain barrels have a 50-60 gallon capacity and are made of recycled food grade barrels. Residential grade aluminum screening covers the top and keeps leaves, debris and small insects from entering the barrel.
Each barrel comes with a hose shut-off on the front and a fitting with a cap near the bottom of the barrel which allows multiple barrels to be connected.
Barrels are designed to remain outside year-round. Instructions are provided for installation and use.
Rain barrels cost $70 each.
Compost Tumblers—Compost tumblers are made of recycled materials including a 55-gallon black barrel and a frame made of plastic.
The barrel absorbs heat all day and holds the heat in during the night and does not allow the contents to cool down like an open bin or a stacking bin. A center tube aerates the compost pile and allows excess moisture to drain out. Steel bars inside the barrel break up the compost and fluff it up for better aeration.
Compost tumblers are pest proof and avoid odor problems by controlling moisture and aeration.
Compost tumbler kits come with all necessary pieces and full assembly instructions as well as general use instructions.
Compost tumbler kits cost $142 each.
